Hiking Trails & Walking Routes in Iceland

Vatnajökull National Park, near Skaftafell (Eastern Region)

Distance: 17 km – Uphill: 777 m – Downhill: 777 m – Time: 5:30/6:50 hrs

Vatnajökull National Park offers a great variety of natural wonders, created by the combined forces of rivers, glacial ice, and volcanic and geothermal activity.

Landmannalaugar, near Skogar (Southern Region)

Distance: 14 km – Uphill: 910 m – Downhill: 985 m – Time: 5:20/6:40 hrs

Landmannalaugar is one of the best hiking destinations in Iceland. Its incredible routes wind through lava fields, hot springs, crater lakes, and volcanic deserts.

Hólsfjall Tröllatindar, near Staðastaður (Western Region)

Distance: 12 km – Uphill: 1031 m – Downhill: 1048 m – Time: 4:50/5:50 hrs

A highly recommended hike over the mountains of the Snæfellsnes peninsula, with marvelous views of the Snæfellsjökull volcano (1,446 m), that’s also known as the setting of Jules Verne’s famous novel “Journey to the Center of the Earth“.

Upper Hveradalir Trail, near Ábær (Northwestern Region)

Distance: 10 km – Uphill: 680 m – Downhill: 653 m – Time: 3:40/4:40 hrs

This hike in the Kverkfjöll mountain range lets you explore one of Iceland’s largest geothermal areas, with countless hot springs and surreal sceneries.

Hverfjall Volcano Hike, near Reykjahlíð (Sudur-Tingeyjarsysla)

Distance: 11 km – Uphill: 286 m – Downhill: 293 m – Time: 3:20/4:10 hrs

The hiking trail climbs up to the Hverfjall volcano in Myvatn, a shallow eutrophic lake surrounded by extensive wetlands in the north of Iceland.
